New employees in 2017

Mohzdeh Khodarahmi accepted the position of Library Operations Associate in the Daley Library Circulation Department, as of January 23, 2017.

Ben Aldred accepted the position of Assistant Professor and Reference and Liaison Librarian, as of January 23, 2017.  He will serve as liaison to the College of Urban Policy and Planning and the Jane Addams College of Social Work.

Amelia Brunskill accepted the position of Visiting Assistant Professor and Information Services and Liaison Librarian, as of February 6, 2017

Carrillo accepts Circulation head position

Elena Carrillo has accepted the position of Circulation Librarian and clinical assistant professor. She will begin during fall 2016; the exact start date is still to be determined.

Carrillo most recently was project developer/archivist at the University of Minnesota, working on an IMLS-funded project related to national repositories for African-American cultural history.  Her circulation experience began in 2008, also at Minnesota:  she held posts as coordinator of electronic reserves, circulation supervisor, and manager of a collections, access, and information unit in the Wilson Library.



Keller appointed Special Collections Librarian

Megan Keller has been appointed Instructor and Special Collections Librarian as of September 7, 2016.

In this position, Keller will teach classes, design instruction programs, and participate in outreach initiatives in the Special Collections unit at the Library of Health Sciences-Chicago. She will supervise one Library Specialist and student employees. In addition, she will handle reference questions, develop exhibits and digitization projects, process collections, create finding aids, and interact with donors. Other duties include collection development and responding to requests for photographer access to original CITY2000 images.

Keller retains her responsibilities as CME project archivist.

O’Brien appointed head of Access to Resources

Kevin O’Brien has been appointed Clinical Assistant Professor and Head Librarian, Access to Resources at the Library of the Health Sciences – Chicago, effective August 16, 2016.

Kevin served as interim head of the unit since August 16, 2013.  He started his initial appointment at UIC in 1997 in the Information Services Department at the Library of the Health Sciences. He moved to Access Services (now Access to Resources) in 1998, and in 2006, added a second, simultaneous appointment in Special Collections.

Kevin’s role as head librarian, Access to Resources, includes responsibility for circulation services, ILL, stack maintenance, and responsibility for building security and maintenance during evenings and weekends. In addition, he will be responsible for library services when extended hours on the first floor are launched in the coming months.  He plans to emphasize staff development and training to provide support and resources for new and expanded roles in the Access to Resources Department that are emerging as an outcome of the renovation, single service point, and ongoing extended hours.

Kevin served on the Library (Design) Team preparing for and planning the first floor renovation and was key in staff relocation and staging during construction. He chairs the Library of the Health Sciences Presence Committee and is editor of E-ppendix, the Library of the Health Sciences electronic newsletter. He also serves as an elected representative to the UIC Faculty Senate, the library’s representative to UIC United Faculty, and on numerous library committees. He curated several exhibitions on history of the health sciences at UIC and hosted several meetings of disciplinary historical societies in his role in Special Collections. He was the founding chair of the Medical Library Association Resource Sharing Special Interest Group.

Shuler memorial service to be held October 5

John Shuler, Associate Professor and Government Information Librarian at UIC, will be remembered in a service to be held on Wednesday, October 5, 2016, from 4-5 p.m. in the Cardinal Room, Student Center East. A reception will follow.

John died unexpectedly in late June at age 59. John had been at UIC for 23 years. He was nationally known in the Government Documents community, writing and speaking frequently on government information issues. John was actively engaged in the Library and on the Faculty Senate, serving on numerous committees and task forces over the years. He was also an active supporter of the faculty union and Treasurer of the UIC United Faculty organization.

The memorial service is being planned by John’s colleagues in the University Library, the UIC Faculty Senate, and the UIC United Faculty. We invite you to join us to remember John and celebrate his many contributions to UIC, the Union, and the field of government information.
