The Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC) Program, a national, voluntary certification program administered by the American Library Association-Allied Profession Association (ALA-APA), is accepting applications for $200 subsidies for program candidates who enroll in and complete LSSC-approved courses. There are 55 subsidies available. Candidates who receive a subsidy award will receive a $200 reimbursement after they pay for and complete an LSSC-approved course.
To apply for a subsidy, candidates must be accepted in the LSSC Program by September 15, 2010. Subsidy recipients must successfully complete one of LSSC’s Approved Courses by April 1, 2011. Application information is available on the LSSC For Candidates page. Candidates must apply for the subsidy by September 15. The LSSC Program staff will select recipients using a random selection process and announce subsidy awards on September 27.
The LSSC Program is partially funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The 2010 Ice Cream Social takes place on Friday, August 13, from noon – 2 p.m., at Daley Library (west door).
The Blue Bunny Ice Cream Truck will stock a wide variety of frozen treats for every preference and dietary restriction. The first ice cream treat will be compliments of the Library. Employees will be issued one ticket. Additional ice cream treats may be purchased.
LHS will have an additional 45 minutes of travel time added to their lunch time to attend this event.
The Sense of Community Committee organized the Ice Cream Social for the Chicago libraries. LHS-Peoria, Rockford and Urbana will have their own ice cream social events.
Libraries Out Loud is the theme of this year’s Illinois Library Association Annual Conference. The conference takes place September 28-30, 2010, at Chicago’s Navy Pier. The preliminary program and registration information is available on the ILA Web site.
Sara Blaszczak, Clinical Assistant Professor and Electronic Resources Librarian, has accepted a position at the University of Michigan and will leave the UIC Library July 15, 2010. Sara has been Electronic Resources Librarian for six years and was a Resident Librarian in Systems for two years prior to that appointment; she has been employed by UIC for almost 18 years.
UIC’s Office of the Historian has been relocated to room 3-192 in the Daley Library. The office staff are Tim Lacy (312 355 0610), Jason Waak (312 355 0609), and David Veenstra (312 355 0610).
The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) is offering scholarships to attend its national conference in Philadelphia, March 30 – April 2, 2011. Registration and stipend support is available for librarians with five or fewer years of post-MLS experience, support staff, and library school students.

As of July 1, 2010, all student employees in the payroll system with an hourly rate below $8.25 were automatically raised to the new minimum rate. Student employees who were in the payroll system, but above the campus minimum ($8.25), remain at their current salary.
