Save the date: March 16 book talk on poker

The next UIC Alumni Authors Series event features Jim McManus, author of Cowboys Full: The Story of Poker, on Tuesday, March 16, 5:30 pm, in the Daley Library Reserve Reading Room.

McManus (1974 LAS, MS 1977 LAS) is a writer, poker player, and professor of literature and writing at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He joined the poker-playing elite by earning a spot at the World Series of Poker final table in 2000. Three years later, his chronicle of his underdog run, Positively Fifth Street, catapulted him to the New York Times best seller list. His recent book, Cowboys Full, is a history of of poker from 19th century back rooms to 21st century television.

McManus talks about his books and poker’s influence on American life. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available.

LAMP meeting for undergrads interested in library school Feb.2

The program coordinators of the LIS Access Midwest Program (LAMP) will be at the Daley Library (room 1-210) on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at noon, for an informational session about the LAMP program. Please alert any of your undergraduate student employees who may be interested in graduate education in library and information science. Participants can bring lunch; the Library will provide beverages and cookies.

LAMP is a regional network of academic libraries and information science schools dedicated to promoting careers within the field of library and information science (LIS) by encouraging promising undergraduate students at its member institutions to participate in activities and events designed to increase their awareness of the profession and to provide support for subsequent graduate studies in library and information science. LAMP seeks to employ a range of recruitment techniques including summer institutes and internships, peer and professional mentorship and guidance, and financial assistance for the completion of a Masters degree in LIS.

LAMP specifically seeks to encourage the participation of students from statistically and historically underrepresented populations in LIS.

Nifty Tools and Gadgets session Feb.4

The UIC Library Staff Development Committee is presenting the first of eleven sessions to be held monthly this year for faculty and staff enrichment. These in-house training sessions and workshops will cover a broad range of topics.

The first session – Nifty Tools and Gadgets — is intended to raise awareness of leading technologies.

Place: Electronic and physical rooms to be announced
Goal: To make staff aware of technologies that are on the verge of becoming ubiquitous. We will also examine how they might affect how we serve our patrons and each other.
Topics to be covered: ereaders, tablets, mobile technologies and more.
Create an awareness of emerging technologies
Discuss how emerging technologies are affecting how we serve patrons and each other

Online W-2s for 2009 tax year available

Online W-2 forms are available as of January 14, 2010. If you have consented to receive your form W-2 electronically, follow the instructions below to retrieve your form.

1. Go to NESSIE
2. Select the “Compensation” tab.
3. Click on “W-2 Wage and Tax Statement”.
4. Click on the link “View your W-2”.
5. Log in using your Bluestem logon and password. (or Enterprise ID)
6. Enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN) or create one.
7. Click the Continue button.
8. Click the Continue button in the “W-2 Wage and Tax Statement View” screen.
9. You will be asked for the last four digits of your Social Security Number. Please enter the four digits and click the OK button.
10. Select the link “Click here for your 2009 W-2 Form.”

Your Form W-2 will display on the screen. You may print the form (it is two pages) or save your form to a hard drive or disk. You may also log off and retrieve it again later through the same process via NESSIE.
