Student Employment Office moving to 2100 SSB

The Student Employment Office is moving to a different suite in the Student Services Building. Effective Wednesday, August 12, 2009, the new location is:

Due to the relocation, the Student Employment Office will be open in 3050
SSB on Friday, August 7, 2009 from 8:30 am-5:00 pm with only limited service.
They will not accept new hire paperwork for student employees.

The office will be also be CLOSED on Monday, August 10, 2009 and Tuesday,
August 11, 2009. The office will resume normal business hours on Wednesday,
August 12, 2009 in its new location 2100 SSB.

Williams appointed Visiting Assistant Information Services Librarian

Irene Williams will begin as Visiting Assistant Information Services Librarian and Visiting Assistant Professor in the Information Services Department of the Library of the Health Sciences on August 16, 2009. Prior to this appointment, Ms. Williams served as Senior Library Specialist here at UIC. She earned her MLS at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2008.

Ice cream social on August 6

The Library Sense of Community Committee invites all library staff and student assistants to our 3rd Annual Ice Cream Social. It will be held on Thursday, August 6, from noon – 2pm at the Library of the Health Sciences. Daley staff will be allowed an extra 45 minutes for lunch in order to attend the Ice Cream Social. Please come and socialize with your colleagues.

The library sites will organize their own Ice Cream Socials.

ALA announces approval of Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC)

The Executive Board of the American Library Association (ALA) approved the establishment of a certification program for library support staff at its Monday, July 13, meeting in Chicago. The LSSC Program is the first national, voluntary certification program for library support staff. Funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the program will now enter a testing phase in five library organizations across the United States.

Candidates must demonstrate achievement of six sets of competencies. Three of the sets, Foundations of Library Service, Technology and Communications and Teamwork are required. Candidates must also demonstrate achievement of three sets chosen from seven additional competency sets. Candidates will either complete approved courses or submit portfolios that demonstrated their achievement.

New local University Payroll customer service

Effective August 1, 2009, the University Payroll Customer Service toll-free number 866-476-3586 will no longer be operational and there will be local phone numbers for each campus Service Center.

For UIC, the new local number is (312) 996-7200. All calls to this number will be answered by a University Payroll representative from the Chicago campus.
