The Sense of Community Committee is sponsoring the Library’s 2nd annual Ice Cream Social on Thursday, Aug. 7, from noon – 2 p.m. outside the west entrance of the Richard J. Daley Library. All library staff and student assistants are invited to attend.
LHS staff will be allowed an extra 45 minutes for lunch in order to attend the Ice Cream Social.
An entry by Lynn McNish, DRU, Charmoiny Jackson and Joel Sanders, both from LHS Access Services, has been selected for inclusion in the 2008 ILA’s Annual Conference “Styles From the Stacks: Project Runway” fashion show on Sept. 25, 2008 at the Doubletree Hotel Chicago Magnificent Mile/Navy Pier. Their design, “ILDS Mail Model,” is a library-inspired creation based on a mailing services theme, and will be modeled by Sanders.
A current schedule is available on the Library Human Resources Web site. Those interested in registering should e-mail HR. Employees are required to obtain approval from their supervisors and/or their department heads before attending.

Sherry Gogo-Madsen, Library Operations Associate, is retiring after 23 years at UIC Library. She hopes to pursue a part time art teaching position at the junior high or high school level.

Effective July 1, 2008, new student employment guidelines and student wage plan are available. The guidelines represent the State Minimum Wage Increase, as well as a $0.25 increase to the hourly salaries on the current wage plan.
Lynn C. Westney, Assistant Reference Librarian, was recognized on June 23 for long-term service to BRASS in providing outstanding leadership and representation at the 20th anniverary celebration of the Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS) of RUSA at ALA Annual, Anaheim, Calif.
Lynn C. Westney, Assistant Reference Librarian, was interviewed on May 1, 2008 by Samantha Selinger-Morris, a reporter with The Sydney Morning Herald. Professor Westney is quoted about her research on restaurant names in an article by Selinger-Morris, “Pun and games” that appeared on June 17.
Effective July 1, the mileage reimbursement rate for employees using private passenger vehicles for University business increased from 48.5 cents per mile to 50.5 cents per mile.
