Supervisory Training Sessions

Professional Position Available

The University of Illinois at Chicago Library seeks candidates for the professional position of Assistant Special Collections Librarian & Assistant Professor in our Special Collections Department. See attachment for job description and application instructions.


Dion Hughes, husband of former employee of UIC Richard J. Daley Library, Valerie Hughes, passed on June 17, 2006. Valerie worked in the Daley Library for 14 years. Valerie resigned her position in March 2005 to further pursue her career at Governor’s State University. A memorial service for Dion Hughes will be Saturday, June 24 at Christ Universal Temple 119th and Ashland Avenue in the Faith Memorial Chapel beginning at 1 p.m.

Emeritus Status

Congratulations to Professor Bill Jones, recent retiree, on receiving emeritus status. This appointment was approved on May 11, 2006 by the Board of Trustees.


Joan Schuitema, Catalog Librarian, has been appointed to CARLI’s new I-Share Cataloging and Authority Control Team. Her term of appointment will begin July 1.

Lynn C. Westney, Assistant Reference Librarian, presented her refereed paper, “An Onomastic Jukebox: From Doo Wop to Pop,” on May 28, 2006 at the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society for the Study of Names CSSN held in conjunction with the 75th Annual Congress of the Canadian Federation for the Social Sciences and Humanities CFSSH, May 27-June 4, at York Unversity, Toronto, CN.


An article by Peg Burnette, Library Operations Assistant, and Jo Dorsch, Health Sciences Librarian, Library of the Health Sciences-Peoria, was published in The Reference Librarian 2006 (93):83-98. “From Novelty to Necessity: Impact of the PDA Experience on Medical Libraries” addresses the early adoption of handheld computing technologies by medical libraries.


Sherry Gogo-Madsen, Library Operations Assistant, has been appointed to the I-Share Resource Sharing Team, effective July 1, 2006. The team, which reports to the I-Share Users Group (IUG). The Team will assist with training and instruction of issues pertaining to resource sharing, including all aspects of inter-library loan, circulation and remote borrowing. It will also help review, establish, and document best practices regarding resource sharing in a consortial setting.

Lisa Zhao, Assistant Catalog Librarian, received the highest award from the Library Society of China 2006 Annual Conference’s Best Paper Contest. Lisa’s article “Developing in Practicing Laws” will be published by the Library Society of China. Lisa will be attending the Library Society of China 2006 Annual Conference in Kunming, Yunnan province, China, July 24-27, 2006.
