A new kind of play at LHS-Peoria

All work and no play? Not if you have Playaway, Now available at the Library of the Health Sciences-Peoria!

LHS-Peoria is pleased to offer a collection of Playaway titles thanks to a Library Systems Technology Act grant through the Alliance Library System.

Not an MP3 or CD player and not software, Playaway is the self-contained audio equivalent of a book. Half the size of a deck of cards, Playaway is ready for immediate listening with just one AAA battery. Using clearly marked buttons, Playaway gives listeners the option of placing digital bookmarks and controlling the speed of a narrators voice, all while easily moving both forward and back through audio book selections. Additionally, Playaway has a universal headphone jack that works with almost any type of headphone, speaker, or mobile adapter.

The collection at LHS-Peoria includes best-selling novels such as Dan Brown’s Angels & Demons, classics such as Pride & Prejudice, beginning yoga and several language courses. Additional titles will be added in April.

Titles are cataloged as “sound recording.” If you do a keyword search for “playaway,” you will see a list of available titles.

Open Archives Initiative Overview

During the recent Indigo training, several library staff mentioned an interest in knowing more about the Open Archives Initiative. An overview of OAI will be given by Nancy John, Digital Publishing Librarian, in the Daley Library ELL and on e-rooms on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007 from 10-11 a.m. The overview will include what OAI is, a general description of what an OAI harvester does, how UIC services (notably OJS, Indigo and First Monday) participate, and searching using the OAIster search engine. The last 20 minutes will be of a more technical nature for those interested in the protocol itself.
